The Transformative Mediation Model
In their book, The Promise of Mediation (1994), Robert A. Baruch Bush and Joseph P. Folger describe transformative mediation:
"The transformative framework is based on a relational view of the world: the view that people are autonomous beings who are at the same time fundamentally connected to one another, and who are constantly striving to balance their autonomy with relating to others."
In the transformative model, the mediator's role is to remain neutral, facilitate a respectful process, and support the parties as they work to resolve their differences in a mutually satisfying way. Their interaction becomes more constructive and provides them with a way to approach future conflicts and disputes.
The transformative framework works for many types of conflict resolution processes, including interpersonal, small group, and organizational applications.
